On Safari

2005

Boxes, crates, white ceramic deer and Kenyan artefacts; a space that could be a warehouse but with an undetermined purpose: are these objects being shipped away, or are they waiting to be unpacked? To whom do they belong? As an Indian born in Kenya and raised in Canada, I am interested in tracing my experience of cultural displacement, and exploring (in)authentic cultural formations through migration. This body of work looks specifically at tourism's contribution to the exploitation of particular societies, how it transforms their cultures into entertainment in the sensationalized experience of vacationing. On this journey, I investigate numerous ideologies that surround the souvenir, the experience of fantasy travel, notions of the "exotic" and the ways in which culture is packaged for tourists.
