Made in Little India
2007
rollover image for reverse This piece is part of a larger project organized through the South Asian Visual Arts Collective (SAVAC) and [Mur Mur]. Big Stories Little India aimed to have South Asian artists ask people in the streets of Little India, Toronto to tell of their experiences of this particular neighborhood. The stories were recorded and signs were posted in Little India indicating a phone number, which linked a specific story to a specific site. The “Made in Little India” postcards serve as an extension of this project where the cards are given and left for people to take. My aim is to get the post-cards sent back to me with a response. What does it mean to be "Made in Little India"? How will my audience interpret this, and what does it reference for them, i.e. identity / cultural politics, the exotic or maybe just an experience from visiting the site? The text from this work will be made available on-line in the near future.
