Colonial Calling > Project Row Houses, Round 27: Race and Class
2007
Project Row Houses is a unique art venue where contemporary artists work with the community to build site-specific installations in a lower income neighborhood in Houston, Texas. Round 27 aimed to address issues of race and class. For this project I created a Victorian veneer inside the house and then applied white vinyl stickers of African masks around the perimeter, creating a border. The viewer is surrounded by the faces of these silhouettes and has to make a full circle before being comforted by a text piece that reads “GO Home”. In this work I am questioning the notion of where home is, but also commenting on ideas of authorship and belonging.
